HSP Summer Stock Theatre Experience

Attention rising 7th graders and above: the HSP Summer Stock Theatre opens its doors in June 2008. This program is modeled on Regional Summer Stock Repertory Theatre. Alumni will perform along side current drama students in “Charley's Aunt,” written by Brandon Thomas. Together with Triple Threat Theatre, friends, neighbors, and members of the community will be invited to share in this enriching and exciting summer experience. Acceptance is limited to the number of roles in “Charley's Aunt”, so apply early. The performances will be on June 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Upper School Commons Building. Charley's Aunt Flyer.

Girl's Basketball Camps

Course Description:
The Summer Institute Beginning Greek course is designed to meet the needs of students with no previous knowledge of Greek who intend to study Greek in the future.  It is a serious commitment: in addition to three hours of class work every day, students can expect some time devoted to homework completion.  The course is devoted to the acquisition of grammar (first declension nouns, first conjugation verbs, the verb ‘to be’), syntax (case uses), and vocabulary (approximately 50 words) through written and oral exercises and integrated readings.

Speech & Debate
Dates: July 28 – August 1

Course Description:
Speech & Debate teaches student the research and organizational skills necessary to address contemporary social and political questions as well as how to present that knowledge in a logical, persuasive, and professional manner.  Students will be introduced to the skills that form the foundation for competitive public speaking and debate, using the structures provided by the National Catholic Forensic League.  Students will focus on the basic skills of Student Congress, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Dramatic Interpretation of Literature.

Poetry Workshop
Dates: July 28 – August 1

Course Description:
This course should act as a general introduction for the further study of the genre.  During the course, students will learn important techniques and terms associated with appreciating and understanding the form.  Students will use the knowledge gained to read and to analyze poems emanating from various persons of any number of nationalities.  However, the class will concentrate on American and British poetry.  Students will also have the opportunity to write and to share poetry of their own with fellow students.

College-Essay Writing Workshop

Course Description:
This course helps high school students tackle one of the most difficult and elusive aspects of the college admissions process: the personal essay. Admission to colleges has grown significantly more competitive over the past several years, and a thoughtful and memorable essay can help a student's application stand out in the crowd. In this course, students will read sample essays and write their own application essay. If the student knows where he or she will be applying to college, he or she should bring those applications to the workshop. Undecided students may work on essays using the questions from the Common Application, which is used by more than 250 independent colleges and universities.

Duke TIP Prep

Course Description:
The Duke TIP Prep class is designed especially for rising seventh graders planning to participate in the Talent Identification Program during the 2008-2009 school year.  The course will teach simple strategies that can be used to improve scores on standardized testing, and will focus primarily on math and critical reading.  Helpful hints for learning new vocabulary and eliminating testing anxiety will also be covered.

Introduction to Portrait Photography
Dates: August 4 – 8

Course Description:
In this course, students will learn how to take studio quality portraits with their camera. It is highly suggested that students have access to either a 35mm SLR or a digital SLR to receive the full benefits of this course. During the week, the class will cover proper exposure, composition secrets, and lighting (external flashes and reflectors). Students will also have a chance to work in a traditional portrait studio.

Creative Writing/Short Story Workshop
Dates: August 4 – 8

Course Description:
This course focuses on creative writing as a form of art and expression. Participants will examine aspects of creative writing, paying particular attention to the short story. Throughout the week, we will review passages from a variety of short stories and discuss the effectiveness of the language and techniques used. We will discuss a number of ways in which stories can be told, as well as how various literary components (voice, point of view, tone, plot, conflict, crisis, climax, resolution, characterization, irony, symbolism, etc.) work in combination to create meaning and effect. Once we have examined the basic elements of the short story, we will “put pen to paper” and create short stories of our own. As a final product, each student will create a complete short story which, if the author so chooses, may be submitted to the HSP Art and Literary Journal for the 2008-2009 school year.

Algebra I Workshop

Course Description:
For rising 7th and 8th graders, this course is suited for students who have completed a full academic year of pre-Algebra or Algebra I and are planning to take a full academic year of Algebra I or Geometry.  The course will cover the fundamentals of algebra using both a traditional and a graphics-based approach.  Topics include solving linear equations and inequalities, factoring polynomials, and simplifying polynomial, rational, and radical expressions.  The TI-83 (or its equivalent) will be used throughout the course.

AP Chemistry Prep

Course Description:
The Advanced Placement Chemistry Preparation course offers a review of key concepts and important problem-solving skills that are emphasized in the AP Chemistry course.  The focus will be on fundamental topics such as nomenclature, unit conversion (dimensional analysis), stoichiometry, atomic structure, bonding, and calculations with significant figures.  Due to the difficulty and pace of the AP course, students should master these topics before beginning AP Chemistry.

AP Biology Prep
Dates: August 4 – 8

Course Description:
The Advanced Placement Biology Preparation course offers a review of some basic chemistry and biology concepts from first year biology and chemistry that are essential to success in AP Biology.  The class will focus on a review of cell structures and functions, basic chemistry concepts, ecology, and a review of genetics. This course is highly recommended for those taking AP Biology, especially juniors and seniors who previously took biology as a freshman and need a review of basic biology topics.

Beginning Latin

Course Description:
The Introduction to Chemistry course will provide a solid foundation for any student taking chemistry next year.  The focus will be on those topics that many students find most challenging.  This course is recommended to any student taking chemistry and (in particular) to those students who would like an introduction to the math skills that are essential in chemistry.

Advanced Pre-Algebra Workshop
Dates: August 4 – 8

Course Description: Course Description: For rising 6th and 7th graders, this course is suited for students who have completed a full academic year of Pre-Algebra and need extra consolidation of key skills.  The course will cover the fundamentals of Pre-Algebra using both a traditional and a graphics-based approach.  Topics include fractions, decimals, percents, integers, number patterns, distributive property, solving equations, graphing inequalities and graphing linear equations.
