Technology and Computer Science Department Courses Programming I: The Introduction to Programming course is a hands-on course designed to teach students the key foundational programming skills. While this course is essential for those who are interested in pursuing the field of technology, the course is valuable for all students as it enhances their logic, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will learn how to develop programs using the Visual Basic programming language while broader fundamental programming techniques are also learned to provide a foundation for learning to program in any language. Programming II: This course explores the next level of computer programming using C++. Students learn about the object-oriented programming structure in preparation for pursuing advanced programming languages. Work with classes, functions and more sophisticated algorithms gives students a broader perspective on computer programming and it will enable students to build more comprehensive computer programs. This course is designed for students who have a greater interest in and who have demonstrated talent in computer programming. This course is a hands-on course and assessments are primarily focused on cumulative programming projects. College Level Computer Science: The College Level Computer Science course will prepare the student to take the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science Exam. Students will learn the fundamentals of the Java programming language and be comfortable extending existing applications, and writing small applications of their own creation. Students will learn to analyze problems and to determine an optimal solution of design and program development. This course emphasizes object-oriented programming methodology with a concentration on problem solving and algorithm development, and is meant to be the equivalent of a first-semester college-level course in Computer Science. It also includes the study of data structures, design, and abstraction. While the Java programming language is the tool to be used in the object oriented environment, it is critical that the student develop the skills to interpret a set of functional and design requirements, and using a systematic methodology, create the correct data structures, design an appropriate interaction of components, and produce efficient, logical, clear and operable code. Robotics: Robotics introduces students to the fundamental principles of robot controllers, controller input/output, memory, simple programming, and interfacing with computers. This course is highly interactive and students will be involved in the design, construction, and operation of a working robot. The history of Robotics is also studied and students have the opportunity to learn about robots in society through research, field trips and guest speakers. Radio Broadcasting: Radio Broadcasting is an introductory course deals with the language and concepts of the radio broadcasting industry. Students are introduced to an overview of radio broadcast history, station organization, past and present technologies, and terminology through the use of lectures, special guests, projects, films, quizzes, exams and group exercises. Students also get to participate in the production of on air broadcast. Audio Production: Audio Production introduces students to basic theories and techniques of recording, editing, and mixing. Instruction covers fundamentals of microphone usage, mixing console operation, and both linear analog and non-linear digital recording and editing. The course utilizes our Pro Tools studio on campus.
Advanced Audio Production:
The Advanced Audio Production course explores advanced theory and practices of audio production. Students are introduced to various techniques that cover the basics for capturing and engineering sound. Although much of the focus of this class relates to radio production, this introduction to the tools and techniques of producing audio also provides the foundation for sound production/reproduction. Students learn essential skills for various audio mediated environments such as television, film sound, multitrack recording, CD production, multimedia, broadcast journalism and the web. Each student will receive hands on experience at the HSPS full recording studio. |
