Performing Arts Programs and Courses HSPS Theatre: HSPS theatre produces two shows at the Upper School level. In the fall, HSPS participates in the GISA One Act Play Festival, where students perform against other schools at the Region level, and if successful advance to the State level competition: In 2006, HSPS won the Region Championship and was runner-up for the State Championship, with a total of 13 top acting awards given to the show’s ensemble performers. During the second semester, the drama program produces a full-length Spring Production: past plays have ranged from a classic selection of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Guys and Dolls, Junior. The drama program is directed by Helene Mengert. The Upper School Drama curriculum offers 3 levels of Theatre Arts classes which introduce, develop and hone essential acting skills. Through acting exercises, scene studies and performance opportunities, young actors are provided with detailed instruction and positive feedback, enabling them to grow and mature as developing artists. Dance Program: In class, students learn the fundamentals of technique (ballet, jazz, and modern) and are introduced to the choreographic process. Instruction is offered by Karen Danello. The program is designed to introduce many styles of dance to the beginning student and to challenge the imagination and the creative expression of the technically advanced dancer. Band Program: The HSPS band program performs in a variety of settings every year. Students learn to play in ensemble settings and to compete in regional and state solo competitions. Each fall students who are high-achieving musicians are chosen to perform in the GISA All-Select Band and Orchestra festival. There are also students who choose to compete in GMEA sponsored competitions, such as All-State and Solo & Ensemble. In addition, the band program presents several concerts during the school year: these include the Family Advent Evening at our Lower School campus, the Advent Vespers Mass, and also a Spring Concert. The music program at HSPS is directed by Jeremy Gibson. The Upper School Music curriculum currently offers three levels of Music Theory courses. Music Theory I introduces to the fundamental principles of music, its mechanics and basic ideologies. Music Theory II delves into more complex content, and focuses on basic compositional skills. Music Theory III is an advanced course which sees student musicians writing large works with good technique and balance. Each course utilizes the worldwide standard composing software, Finale. In addition to Music Theory courses, instrumental rehearsals are held after school, allowing students to rehearse as they are available.
Choral Program: HSPS students are afforded the
opportunity to join their voices in songs of praise with the Liturgical
Choir, under the direction of Meg Hunter-Kilmer. Each week, the
Liturgical Choir sings at the school’s weekly mass, with weekly
rehearsals held during the school’s lunch break. In addition, the choir
sings at special events including the Christmas Vespers Service,
assemblies, full school masses, commencement and concerts. |
