Modern Language Courses

Italian 100: First Year High School conversational Italian- Introduction to the basics of the language including greetings and other basic language needs.

Italian 200: Second Year High School conversational Italian- Prerequisite Italian 100. Expands vocabulary and phrases learned in first year and prepares the student for additional studies.

Italian 300: Third Year High School conversational Italian- Prerequisite Italian 200. Continues to expand vocabulary and phrases learned in Italian 100 and 200 and prepares the student for additional studies.

Italian 400: Fourth Year High School conversational Italian- Prerequisite Italian 300. Exposes the student to the written word common in day to day conversational Italian and is enhanced by magazines and newspaper contemporary articles.

Spanish 070: Introductory Jr. High Spanish- No previous Spanish necessary. Introduces students to the basics of the language and grammar through skits, communicative activities, and use of visual aids. Topics covered include conjugation of verbs in the present, present progressive, and future, pronunication drills, cultural projects and studies, poetry/ literature excerpts and other readings. Students will keep journals throughout the year, correspond with children at the Montana de Luz orphanage in Honduras, and complete a video project.

Spanish 080: Intermediate Jr. High Spanish- Pre-requisite SPN 070 unless approved by faculty. This course reviews and expands upon grammar and vocabulary introduced in SPN 070. Topics covered include conjugation of verbs in the past tense, double object pronouns, reflexive verbs, basic conversational skills, pronunication drills, cultural projects and studies, and poetry/literature excerpts. Students will also read a novel, Esperanza Rising, and complete journals and other related activities throughout the year. Students will correspond with children at the Montana de Luz orphanage in Honduras and complete a video project.

Spanish 100: First Year High School Spanish- No previous Spanish necessary. Reviews and expands upon middle school Spanish. Topics covered include conjugation of verbs in present, past, future, object pronouns, demonstrative adjectives, and superlatives. A special focus will also be placed on conversational and auditory skills. Students will keep journals, write compositions, role-play, and complete two major school projects.

Spanish 200: Second Year High School Spanish- Pre-requisite is Spanish 100. Topics covered include a review of grammar points covered in 100 and the conjugation of verbs in the present, past, future, conditional, and subjunctive. Students will continue practicing communicative skills through role play and cooperative learning activities, reading skills, auditory skills, and writing skills with journals and compositions. Students will complete two major school projects.

Spanish 300: Third Year High School Spanish- Pre-requisite is Spanish 200. Expands on the grammar and vocabulary from Spanish 200. An emphasis will be placed on verb conjugations in the past tense and the subjunctive mood. A particular focus will be placed on Spanish and Latin American literature, art, and culture. Students will keep journals and complete two major school projects.

Spanish 410AP: College Level Spanish- Pre-requisite is Spanish 300. Prepares students to take the Advanced Placement Exam. Exam format, advanced grammatical structures, literature, and culture will be the focus of this course. 2 mock AP exams will be given during the school year.

Spanish 420: Latin American Literature- Pre-requisite SPN 300. This independent study course focuses on literature by great writers such as Borges, Cortazar, Marquez, Rulfo, Neruda, and Allende. Biographical information about these famous Latin American writers will also be studied. This course will meet for one semester (.5 credits).

Spanish 430: Spanish Peninsular Literature- Pre-requisite SPN 300. This independent study course will be centered around a short Spanish novel. Students will be required to submit essays and meet for discussions throughout the semester. This course will meet for one semester (.5 credits).
