Modern Language Activities and Clubs

Students are taken to at least one event per year in the theatre when possible to see a Spanish production. In the past students have seen Don Quijote, Ballet Folkorico and others as they are brought to the Atlanta area.

In the course of their work students in the middle and high school levels are given the opportunity to produce a video of an interview, news report, weather report or skit showing their command of the language and their ability to put into practice the vocabulary and grammar used during the year.

High achieving students of Spanish participate in the National Spanish Exam.

Students who excel in Spanish are eligible for the National Spanish Honor Society or the Junior National Spanish Honor Society.

Día de Los Muertos celebration
The Mexican custom of Day of the Dead is celebrated with Mexican foods and students are taught the meaning of the holiday in México. Where possible the middle school students make ofrendas which are judged and prizes awarded.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
Parade of the Americas. Students with ancestry in any of the Americas (including USA and Canada) are invited to a special Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Patron of the Americas. A special processional takes place with the top 7th grade girl and boy carrying in the portrait of Our Lady followed by students bearing flags from all the countries of the Americas represented in our student body.

Día de Los Reyes
Candy celebrations for Three Kings Day which is the official “Christmas celebration” for children in Latin countries.

International Week
One continent is presented each day. Facts of each continent and trivia questions are presented. The last day of International Week consists of students wearing traditional clothes and/or colors of their heritage. Student volunteers decorate tables of their country of heritage and provide food samples, play music and give information to other students.

Spanish Club
The Spanish Club enjoys a great mix of students from many diverse cultural backgrounds. The students are encouraged to share their cultural experiences to develop a celebratory dialogue about culture differences and similarities.

Spanish club members also enjoy participating in the Día de Guadalupe Mass, leading International Week, and corresponding and sponsoring children from the Montana de Luz HIV/AIDS orphanage in Honduras.
