Mathematics Department Philosophy Welcome to Holy Spirit Preparatory School’s Mathematics Department. We are dedicated to inspiring keen and passionate interest in mathematics, developing strong scholars, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics throughout high school and beyond. Within Catholic education traditions our purpose is to develop strong mathematical problem solving, critical thinking and reasoning abilities. Students receive a solid grounding in essential concepts and skills, including computation and estimation. They will also develop their ability to use technology to solve math problems. The universality of the subject and the many cultures from which its history is derived are appreciated. We believe that mathematics provides a means of international communication which is powerful, concise and unambiguous. Mathematics provides students with a means to represent, explain, predict and explore. An understanding of mathematical connections with other content areas is all pervasive. The inherent interest of mathematics and the appeal which it can have for many is explored not only through problem solving but problem posing.
Ultimately students are taught in a
learning environment that aims to harness their unique talents and maximizes their abilities. Class discussions and collaborative learning endorse the collegiate atmosphere in our lessons. We believe that through their course of study students will develop as they acquire positive, life-enriching attitudes and beliefs about mathematics and its wider implications. |
