Activities and Clubs
Mu Alpha Theta Mu Alpha Theta is the well established National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society. The club was founded in 1957. In the words of one of its founder Dr. R. Andree, Mu Alpha Theta is "an organization dedicated to promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school and junior college education."
Pi Day 3/14 Pi Day is an internationally recognized celebration of the beauty of pi. The discovery of pi (the ratio for the circumference of a circle divided by its diameter) is one of the great accomplishments of human endeavor, crossing the pages of history and continents and pointing a finger to God’s order in creation. Pi day is recognized at Upper School with the memorization of pi digits contest and various informative and enjoyable house day activities.
AMC Competitions The American Mathematics Competitions (AMCs) are designed by The Mathematical Association of America. The AMC national contests are intended to identify, recognize and reward excellence in mathematics.
Peer Math Mentoring Selected students are given the opportunity to peer mentor. Students solidify what they have learnt, earn service hours and build on the collaborative camaraderie and commitment to excellence of the wider school community. Experience and some convincing research indicate that peer mentors can positively influence motivation and attainment in mathematics. From its inception year in 2007/8 with over fifty mentors and mentees the program continues to grow and bear much fruit.
Math Clinic The lunchtime Math Clinic ran by competent math students and attended by a faculty sponsor provides another means of support and exploration to math students. The math clinic is geared towards students taking either Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry or Pre-Calculus.
