The John Carroll Resource Center
The mission of the John Carroll Resource Center at the Holy Spirit Prep Lower School is to provide students with dyslexia and / or other language processing and / or organizational challenges, the support needed to maximize their potential within a college preparatory environment. The Carroll Center is not resourced to assist with significant behavioral challenges and is not able to meet all needs. Center personnel will advise a student’s parents if it becomes apparent that there are additional needs that require third party support. A dedicated Carroll Center team of administration and teachers provide individualized support and enable academic success. Holy Spirit recognizes each student as a unique learner. The Carroll Center is committed to helping each student reach his or her potential.

An Individualized Resource Plan (IRP) is prepared for each enrolled student, with the purpose of outlining the support needed to maximize the student’s strengths and overcome or accommodate challenges. Depending on the needs of the student, resource services outlined in the IRP may include in-class assistance and modifications, one-on-one instruction, small group instruction, study and organizational skills training, and homework tutorial. Benchmark assessments and progress reports are provided to track the student’s growth. The Carroll Center staff, classroom teachers, parents and students work together toward the common goal of academic independence.

Carroll Center students spend the majority of the school day in mainstream classes scheduled for their grade level. Younger students may attend small group classes in the Center according to their needs and emerging skills, particularly in the areas of reading and writing. For these students, the Center utilizes the multi-sensory Orton Gillingham Approach, S.P.I.R.E., Reading with Meaning and Handwriting Without Tears programs. Older students, those in the 5th and 6th grades, visit the Carroll Center to learn individualized study skills and organizational strategies. Yet these older students receive the balance of their support in the form of in-class assistance, as they prepare for the transition to the Upper School. Enrolled resource students in all grades benefit from attending the after-school Resource Tutorial, where they receive homework guidance from their Resource Teacher.

To be sure that the needs of the whole child are met, a dedicated Resource Counselor is part of the team of professionals serving enrolled resource students. The Resource Counselor is available to address any social or emotional concerns of the resource students as they meet their academic demands. Additionally, the Resource Counselor acts as a liaison between the resource faculty and general classroom faculty to ensure all accommodations and services needed for success are addressed. The Resource Counselor is the primary point of contact and information for parents. The Resource Center is overseen by Dr. Linda Anthony.

Enrollment in the John Carroll Resource Center requires current psycho-educational testing, (and if appropriate occupational therapy and / or other reports) and supplemental tuition. The testing should document a need that the Center is equipped to meet.

If you are interested in learning more about the resource program, please contact Sharon Higgins, Director of Admissions, at 678-904-2811.
