ENG070/071 (7th Grade Literature):
7th Grade Literature introduces students to literary genres by reading a variety of short stories, novels, plays, and poems. Students will complete a range of writing assignments (informed by drafting, revision, and editing) on those texts. The course also emphasizes reading comprehension, basic literary terms, vocabulary, grammar, and the development of clear writing skills. This course is complemented by ENG075 – 7th Grade Writing Workshop.
ENG075 (7th Grade Writing Workshop):
In 7th Grade Writing Workshop, students are given the opportunity to develop and refine their writing and grammar skills in a laboratory setting. While many of the activities in ENG075 can stand alone, an important element of the course is the integration of course topics with projects already assigned in other courses. This course is intended to complement ENG070/071.
ENG080/081 (8th Grade Literature):
8th Grade Literature integrates the study of literature and the practice of essay writing, both in and out of class, with further study of the writing process. Students will learn to develop their style while focusing on essay writing. Students will develop further their reading comprehension, analysis, vocabulary, and grammar skills. They will read a variety of short stories, poetry, and drama selections from the textbook, as well as selected novels and supplementary materials. This course is complemented by ENG085 – 8th Grade Writing Workshop.
ENG085 (8th Grade Writing Workshop):
In 8th Grade Writing Workshop, students are given the opportunity to develop and refine their writing and grammar skills in a laboratory setting. ENG100/101 (9th Grade Literature of the Western World):
This course focuses upon classics of the Western world from medieval times through the 19th century. The course integrates the study of literature and the practice of essay writing, both in and out of class, with further study of the writing process. Students will learn to develop their style while focusing on essay writing. Throughout the year the students will be responsible for vocabulary development, outside reading, and standardized testing preparation.
ENG200/201 (10th Grade American Literature):
American Literature focuses upon classics of American literature from the colonial to the modern period. The course integrates the study of literature and the practice of essay writing, both in and out of class, with further study of the writing, revision, and editing process. Students will learn to develop their style while focusing on essay writing. Throughout the year the students will be responsible for vocabulary development, outside reading, and, in the second semester, a research paper on an American author of the student's choosing.
ENG300 (11th Grade British Literature):
British Literature is a comprehensive survey of British literature in all its wonderful variety. Students will read, study, and analyze various plays, poems, and novels emanating from the United Kingdom. Students will begin to conduct sophisticated research culminating in an extensive, college-level research paper.
ENG410 (College Level English Language):
The College Level English Language course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and to become skilled writers who can compose for a variety of purposes. By their writing and reading in this course, students should become aware of the interactions among a writer's purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effective writing.
ENG420 (12th Grade College Level English Literature):
The College Level English Literature course is designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students can deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students should consider a work's structure, style, and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.
ENG400 (12th Grade English Seminar):
The 12th Grade English Seminar is designed to give students a more personal experience with a specific topic in literature. Close reading and lively discussions in a small group allows students to see the connections between literature and their own world. Possible topics for these seminars include Shakespeare, Poetry, The Short Story, Catholic Literature and Creative Writing.
ENG205/305 (Journalism I and II
Electives):
Journalism focuses on journalistic principles and practices of the news media. The primary objective of the course will be to produce quality, journalistically sound news articles for the school newspaper, THE PARACLETE. In order to achieve quality news writing skills, the students will study the history of journalism, as well as analyze effective journalistic techniques and styles.
