WHAT IS THE GOAL SCHOLARSHIP? In 2008, the State of Georgia passed HB 1133, allowing Georgia taxpayers to receive a state income tax credit for amounts contributed to qualified student scholarship organizations, such as the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program. Under the new law, married couples can receive a tax credit of up to $2,500, individuals up to $1,000, and corporations up to 75% of their total Georgia tax liability. It is important to note that a tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in taxes you owe, so every dollar you give, up to the limit, is a dollar less in tax you have to pay. It is really like re-directing your tax dollars from the Georgia Department of Revenue to GOAL. In addition, contributions to GOAL are deductible for federal income tax purposes. So by participating you get the opportunity to help Holy Spirit families, tell Georgia where to spend your tax dollars, get a state tax credit and a federal tax deduction at the same time…and you do it all simply by re-directing tax dollars you already have to pay!
