Classics Department Activities and Clubs

National Junior Classical League (NJCL) www.njcl.org
Membership in the Holy Spirit Prep Chapter of the NJCL is determined each September. Any sophomore, junior, or senior who achieved a grade of 91% or higher in each of the two semesters of the previous year in either a Latin or Greek course will be enrolled as a member.

Georgia Junior Classical League (GJCL) www.gjcl.org
Membership in the Holy Spirit Prep Chapter of the GJCL is automatically conferred on any member of the NCJL (see above).

National Latin Honor Society (NLHS)
Membership in the National Latin Honor Society is determined each March.  It is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who meet the following criteria:

1. The student must be a current member of the NJCL (see above);
2. The student must have achieved a score on the previous year’s National Latin Exam above the national average for that year and that exam;
3. The student must have achieved a grade of at least 95% in Latin in both the second semester of the previous year and the first semester of the current year.

Exceptions: Students who participate in at least four Certamen practices during that school year are exempt from criterion 3 above.  Instead they must have achieved a grade of at least 91% in Latin in both the second semester of the previous year and the first semester of the current year.

Students who compete in at least one interscholastic Certamen tournament during that school year may waive all other requirements except the 91% grade in Latin for the first semester of the current year.

NLHS Graduation Cords

Honor Cords are awarded to graduating seniors who are enrolled in the NLHS in their senior year.  In cases where a senior did not take Latin as a senior (either by enrolling in Greek or by early completion of the classical language requirement), if the student was a member of the NLHS as a junior that graduate will be awarded an Honor Cord.
