Art Department Courses
FA101 - Artisan Craft Workshop:
The artisan craft workshop will expose students to the “crafts” end of art. Students will learn about a variety of artisan crafts while creating pieces in the areas of sculpture, ceramics, textiles, beads, photography, collage and papermaking. Other areas may be explored as interest dictates.
FA105 - Survey of Art:
This course is for the beginner artist who does not wish to pursue the AP Art track. In this class student will be introduced to the rules of composition and the elements of art using small daily creative assignments. Projects include: single line drawing, perspective studies, still lifes, color wheels and painting. This class progresses at a slower rate in order to ensure master of introductory skills in a variety of basic media.
FA107 - Ceramics/Pottery:
First, students will be taught a variety of clay handbuilding techniques including pinch, slab and coil will be explored through both functional, as well as non-functional projects. Next, students will learn the basic principles of making pottery forms on the wheel. Students will learn throwing, trimming and glazing techniques.
FA110 - Studio Art I:
This is an introduction course for 9th – 12th graders. In this class, students will experience a variety of media and technique. Examples include: painting, drawing, collage, clay modeling, and printmaking. This course focuses on the elements of art and looking at art with intellect and criticism. This is the foundation course to all Fine Art classes at HSP.
FA210 - Studio Art II:
In this class, students explore more advanced techniques in oil painting, portraiture, monotype printing and sculpture. The main focus of this course covers the chronology of art movements throughout history.
FA330 - Film Photography:
Pre-requisite- FA110. In this course students will explore the history and technique of film photography. Students will work in several photographic forms, including: black and white, digital, color slide and Polaroid. Composition and mastery of manual techniques are the focus of this class. This is a darkroom based course. It is recommended that students have access to a 35mm Manual camera and a personal digital camera for use in this course.
FA360 - Studio Art III:
Pre-requisite- FA210. This course focuses on the formation of concept and design. Projects are loosely structured and alternative processes are explored. Projects include: action painting, plaster carving, illustration and ink work. All assignments are assessed based on theme, concept and the ability to express ideas and social issues. The research portion of this class requires frequent gallery visits.
FA410 - AP Studio Art:
Pre-requisite- FA360 and
Dept. Chair Rec. This is a portfolio class that is entirely structured by the students. Each student is required to complete a minimum of 24 art pieces over 2 semesters. This class requires summer work and weekly studio hours outside of class. This is not a course for the “leisure” artist, it is strongly recommended for those students wishing to pursue art after high school and who have the drive and responsibility to work independently.
