Classics Department Philosophy
The Classics program at Holy Spirit Preparatory School is designed around an awareness of the historical significance of the Greek and Latin languages as foundations for the Western intellectual tradition and the history of the Catholic Church. To that end, both Greek and Latin languages are introduced to seventh and eighth grade students in the course of the "Lyceum" sequence and for High School students the Classics Department offers two streams of Latin classes, conventional Latin and challenge classes, aimed at College level work for the senior year. By the final year of the Latin program, and even earlier in some classes, students will have acquired the ability to read authentic Latin texts, both classical and liturgical. All classes seek to generate an interest in wider Greek and Roman cultural contexts, incorporating mythology, art, history, archaeology and social life.

For complete Classics, a parallel Greek program is on offer for those students who wish to learn to read the New Testament and Classical, Greek writers of literary, philosophical and historical interest. Uniquely, Greek is offered for the Lower School through the Upper School in an inviting "Greek Breakfast Club" setting as well as in standard Upper School classes. Holy Spirit is one of few high schools in the United States to offer a full-scale Classical Greek language program.

Overall, the Classics Department attempts to engage students in cultivation of the intellect by emphasizing a genuine love of learning and an excitement of discovery.
